Trick or Treat, I’m Johnny Cash
What is your kid going as this Halloween? Spiderman, Harry Potter…a freakin’ clown?!
Everyone knows that putting a Led Zeppelin or Ramones t-shirt on your toddler is obnoxious; we get it, you’re still cool even though you have a child. Maybe you over compensate and try to dress them up like little cute bear cubs or fairy princesses. Bah!!
Conversely, helping your little one create the perfect Johnny Cash Halloween costume is just good parenting. The sooner they know and appreciate the man in black, the more likely they are to make good musical choices for the rest of their lives.
If this kid comes to your front door, just give him all the candy and turn your front porch light off. Halloween is DONE.
Houston Ice Houses

I love posting reviews on my Yelp account. Ninety-nine percent of the time I check other folks reviews of local establishments – and especially out of town places – before I head out.
Now that the weather is a bit cooler. It’s time to look for that great patio or deck for a cold beer and maybe a greasy burger.
When it comes to wetting the whistle and only brew will do, ice houses are where it’s at – and Houston is overflowing with ‘em. I’ll post a few of the favorites from Yelp with snippets of the review for you here.
Maybe we’ll run into each other over a bucket one afternoon.
“When the week is long and the cash is low, Alice’s Tall Texan welcomes you with extra-cold goblets of beer,” shares Amber D. “For $1.50, have a Lone Star, and for $1.75 a Shiner.”
Just down the way, you’ll find Wendy T at Rose Garden. Boasting “a pool table, a well-stocked juke, and a pretty porch out back surrounded by roses… if nirvana can be a bar, this is it.”
And Shady Tavern is a “really awesome spot for some day-drinkin’ or for hanging out at night by the fire pits,” shares Zach C. There’s also a fenced-in area “specifically for wild doggy bliss.”
“Nothing says Houston like an old shack serving cold beer amidst smoke, stale Cheetos, billiards, locals, picnic tables, horse shoes, country tunes, and a plethora of oscillating fans,” proclaims Mark Y, loyal patron of Catty Corner.
I am a big fan of Cedar Creek in the Heights. The buffalo burgers are great and they have a full bar so friends who aren’t big beer drinkers can have a cold drink too!

Abe G knows a good icehouse when he tastes it: “Mike‘s has become our go-to place for a quick-n-easy burger-n-beer after work.” A cheeseburger, drink and fries rings up for $8.25! Up for some billiards?

Serving cold beer for more than 80 years, West Alabama Ice House is a Houston mainstay. “Sometimes where you’re drinking is as important as what you’re drinking,” professes Gilbert L: “The beer selection is pretty great. We drank Southern Star Pine Belt IPA, Bombshell Blonde and Racer 5 all afternoon. We pretty much killed their IPA inventory… at least we like to think so. Hah!” Plus you can bring your dogs!
