Saucy Sprint

Ever wondered what it’s like to run in one of those “mascot” races around the warning track during a ballgame?

You know the Milwalkee Brewers have their sausage races, the Washington Nationals have the founding father races and here in Houston we have the (very lame) Taco Bell sauce pack races.

Rachel Frey is a social media/broadcasting intern at Minute Maid Park. Which means she’s one of the folks who gets to put on the packet and run!

In a recent dash she took her flip cam along and posted this on her Twitter account.

Jersey Reject

Have you ever had a custom jersey order blocked and deemed inappropriate over at MLB.com? Major League Baseball decided they had enough this morning when baseball fans tried to create a Los Angeles Dodgers Jersey with the text “Chapter” and the number “11″ printed on the backside.

RIB Magazine reports:

The Official Store of Major League Baseball blocked the purchases of such jerseys and prompted consumers with the following message when they attempted to purchase the custom jersey. Your current entry cannot be processed. Language deemed inappropriate, derogatory, or profane will not be accepted. Please create a new entry.

An influx of “Chapter 11″ and “McCourt 0″ custom jersey orders were being requested after the bankruptcy protection filing by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. The bankruptcy protection filing by the Los Angeles Dodgers, has revealed a slue of bills that have not been paid, including $21M allegedly owed to Manny Ramirez.

White House Doormen

Talk about your very special assignment.

Things like this always choke me up. The tradition and pagentry of something so simple as opening the door for the Oval Office/West Wing of the White House is as good as anything!

Calling from the President’s Limo

This happened back in 2010 but I just now discovered the video.

After a ‘backyard’ discussion with his host family and their neighbors President Obama invited the family’s twins to have a look at the Presidential limousine – and call their mother who was inside the family home.

Talk about a call you shouldn’t have let the machine get!

Mother Nature is Awesome

Sometimes I am just left speechless by the amazingness of nature. A video I wan to share here proves that fact once again.

Here’s the video description from the site:

A giant pacific octopus mother who lived just across from downtown Seattle had her hatch right under the noses of local divers. Her den was sequestered in Cove Two in West Seattle, in a location that spared her from predators and over-visitation by humans. On September 4 (aka early, early on September 5), 2010, the eggs began hatching. It’s a time of mixed emotion; joy at the hatch, and sadness at the knowledge that this event means the mother’s life will end. The hatch lasted a full week, after which the mother died.

Footloose Trailer

The “Footloose” remake hits theaters on October 14th. It stars Julianne Hough from “Dancing With the Stars,” Dennis Quaid as her strict dance-hating dad, and Kenny Wormald as Ren, the character immortalized by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 original.

I usually can’t stand remakes…especially of movies that so are branded onto my youth. And this one likely will be another disappointment. I do like Julianne Hough. Not enough to see if she can act…she can’t really sing, but she CAN dance.

So we’ll see. And here’s you can see the movie trailer.

Ready to Quit?

The last week I’ve been dealing with my Mom in the hospital. She can’t breath. Emphysema or what they now call Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is stealing the last few years of her life. Fifty years of 2 packs if Winston reds a day will do that for you.

In 1964 the Surgeon General of the U.S. (the chief doctor for the country) wrote a report about the dangers of cigarette smoking. He said that the nicotine and tar in cigarettes cause lung cancer. In 1965 the Congress of the U.S. passed the Cigarette Labelling and Advertising Act. It said that every cigarette pack must have a warning label on its side stating “Cigarettes may be hazardous to your health.”

That didn’t seem to deter too many people.

The Food and Drug Administration released nine new graphic warnings for cigarette packages today — the first new labels in more than two decades. The new warnings, which depict the negative health impact of cigarettes, are required to cover at least 50 percent of every pack of cigarettes sold in the U.S. by mid-2013.

I really don’t think anything will stop people from smoking if they really want to – and I have some friends who smoke out of spite because they are being squeezed out of smoking in public places. And a study shows teens are not smoking because of the expense and not the health risks.
